Our story
NOUS Engineering is a boutique Eagle Rock-based engineering firm founded by Liz Mahlow and Matt Melnyk. Since our earliest days, we have worked on projects ranging from Coachella installations to Morphosis-designed museums to retail flagships for Khaite; have undertaken rigorous adaptive reuse projects with partners like Bestor Architecture; and have provided engineering services for significant national projects like MASS’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Chapman University’s Hilbert Museum of Art, and a series of Altadena and Pacific Palisades fire rebuilds.

Ana Alarcon
Office CoordinatorAna joins NOUS Engineering as an office coordinator, bringing a wide range of experience as an administrative professional with a focus on supporting teams and office operations. Her experience also includes work in non-profit organizations and philanthropy. Outside of work, Ana enjoys spending time with family, crafting and cooking.

Anna Smith-Price
BIM DesignerWhile at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Anna was a member of Structural Engineering Students for Haiti (SESH), including a week volunteering in the country. She soon started an internship with the structural engineering non-profit Build Change in the summer 2010 in Port-Au-Prince. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering (ARCE) from Cal Poly, she worked with Miyamoto International Inc., Haiti for four years. She focused on seismic risk assessments, structural analysis/design, construction supervision and training for retrofits, repairs, and new construction projects. In 2015, Anna attended the USC College of Architecture Heritage Conservation Summer Program due to her passion for preservation. Shortly after, Anna decided to return to the United States and started at NOUS in May of 2017, loving every minute of it!

Araxi Malazian
DesignerA born and raised SoCal native, Araxi earned her Bachelor of Civil Engineering in Building Science from the University of Southern California followed by a Master of Structural Engineering degree at Princeton University. At Princeton, her thesis on the parametric study of ancient Armenian churches honed her focus on architecture, advanced modelling, graphical analysis techniques, and historic structures. In 2025, Araxi moved back to LA and joined the NOUS Engineering team. When she’s not at work, Araxi can most likely be found reading, playing tennis, crafting, or road tripping to her next national park.

Daniela Gomes
NOUS ProductionAfter working over ten years in the Architecture, Urban Planning and Interior Design industries in Brazil, Daniela moved to New Zealand with her family to pursue her Master of Science in Applied Management. While on this adventure, she discovered new skills working with the community on projects such as a kids after-school program as well as leading a team during New Zealand's elections. Embracing opportunities outside her original career makes Daniela feel creative, resourceful, and especially connected to the community. Now back to the AEC industry, Daniela is challenging herself as a BIM modeler and loving it! When not working, Daniela and her family can be found enjoying New Zealand's parks and tracks, or board gaming for hours!

Harshil Vikmani, PE
Senior EngineerAfter moving to the United States in 2015, Harshil pursued a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. He gained professional experience in San Francisco working on multi-story residential, commercial, and industrial projects, followed by several years in Mumbai on high-rise concrete structures across U.S., Middle East, and Indian markets. Joining NOUS Engineering in Mumbai, Harshil looks forward to working on U.S. and international projects with a growing interest in specialty structures. Harshil enjoys cooking in his free time and loves playing tennis.

Jiakun Gao
Senior EngineerBorn and raised in China, Jiakun moved to Los Angeles to pursue his graduate studies. He earned his Master of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Southern California in 2020. Before joining NOUS Engineering, Jiakun worked as a structural designer in Los Angeles, gaining experience in the industrial and institutional sectors. Outside of work, Jiakun enjoys skiing, swimming, and playing board games.

Justin Rowe
NOUS ProductionJustin is a structural drafter/modeler who provides additional BIM resources. With some years under his belt, he brings knowledge and experience across a wide range of sectors to our projects and always ensures quality and delivery are at the forefront. Like many other staff at NOUS, he has an eye for Architecture and Engineering and is always striving to ensure ‘smooth collaboration’ is achieved. Outside of project delivery, he juggles family life along with his passion for the great outdoors.

Lance Tan, PE
Design EngineerBorn in the Anhui region of China and raised in Shanghai, Lance Tan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics at Southeast University in Nanjing. Moving to the US in 2018, he attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and earned a Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering. After graduate school, Lance moved to the West Coast gaining experience in both industrial and residential sectors before joining NOUS Engineering. Lance is a sports fan and enjoys playing basketball and video games with friends outside of work hours.

Mengzhu He, PE
Senior EngineerMengzhu earned a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining NOUS, she gained broad experiences on a wide variety of building types including schools, hospitals, industrial, commercial, malls, etc. in Chicago and Southern California.

Mit Gala, SE
AssociateAfter earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Mumbai, Mit moved to Los Angeles in 2015 for the Master of Science program in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. Joining NOUS in 2016, Mit enjoys working on special structures. Mit loves attending concerts and is extremely passionate about soccer.

Nile Kim
DesignerBorn and raised in Korea, Nile earned his Bachelor of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. He first joined NOUS Engineering as an intern in 2024 and became a full-time member of the team in the summer of 2025. Shaped by his diverse background, Nile approaches structural design with a harmony of technical rigor and creative expression. Outside of work, Nile enjoys art, music, and gaming, drawing inspiration and balance from creativity and play.

Rachel Driver
Project CoordinatorAfter making the long journey from Rhode Island the summer of 2017, Rachel landed in sunny Los Angeles where she started working at NOUS. She has a background in construction and loves to volunteer her time for Community Arts Organizations. Outside of work, she has dedicated her life to studying Community Development, Art History and trying all the food.

Reyisha Mahemuti
DesignerBorn and raised in China, Reyisha earned her Master of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering from UCLA in 2025, specializing in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. She is particularly interested in improving building resilience through seismic isolation and seismic retrofit. Outside of work, Reyisha enjoys staying active through cycling, swimming, and yoga. She also loves winding down with a good movie or book and often plans trips to explore new places and cultures.

Sunny Westervelt
BookkeeperSunny Westervelt is a Los Angeles native and a proud graduate of the University of California, Irvine (UCI). As an accountant at NOUS, Sunny brings an enthusiasm for numbers and provides financial organization to the team. Sunny’s love for accounting comes from the challenge and reward of making sense of complex information and supporting her colleagues with clear, accurate financial insights. She values teamwork, open communication, and always looks for ways to make processes more efficient. Outside of work, Sunny has been a snowboarding coach for 7 years and loves sharing her passion for the sport.

Timothy Kanu
DesignerTimothy first joined NOUS Engineering as an intern in 2021. After earning his degree in Architectural Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the team full-time in 2023. With his architectural engineering background, Timothy especially enjoys modeling and analyzing unconventional structures with complex geometries. Outside of work, Timothy enjoys reading and working on personal projects that allow him to explore his creativity and interest in design.

Tristen Mullin
DesignerRaised in Vail, Colorado, Tristen attended California Polytechnic State University. While earning his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering at Cal Poly, he spent a term abroad studying Structural Engineering at Vilnius Tech University and examining architecture all over Europe. He also participated in a collaborate studio that designed and built a polytechnic school in Same, Tanzania. Tristen joined NOUS in 2025 and brings a strong attention to detail and design, incorporating aesthetic qualities in everything he does. During his free time, Tristen is either playing video games, working out, or going out with friends. He’s usually listening to music and is an avid audiophile.
