UCLA Garden Pavilion
The UCLA Garden Pavilion acts as a highly visible main entrance to the botanical gardens and as a major threshold between the university campus and its immediate surroundings.
To line the new accessible path, Lehrer Architects designed a guardrail system of perforated bent-aluminum planes that reflect light, cast shadows, and allow peeks into and out of the gardens. NOUS provided a finite element analysis of the perforated metal panel shapes to determine the capacity of the cladding system. This analysis simplified the overall structure of the guardrail, providing cost and schedule savings to the client and streamlining the design so that it lives more easily with its natural setting.
