Tower of Twelve at Coachella
A series of modular blocks assembled to create an integrated structural system, the Tower of Twelve appears void of any underlying primary support.
NOUS worked closely with the designer to identify points of alignment and concealed connections, structurally linking the wood-framed, plywood-lined blocks to create a continuous load-path to the ground. The piece is supported by a steel-framed platform, calibrated to ensure global stability under high winds. When fully assembled, the front edge of the open face block performs as an irregular stacked portal frame providing a measure of lateral resistance. The result is a visually complex assembly that appears almost physically impossible.
