Pagoda by James Jean

Based on the shape of a pentagonal hexecontrahedron, The Pagoda synthesizes material experimentation and artistic expression.

The Pagoda is a glass pavilion and sculpture designed by artist James Jean in collaboration with United Environment Architecture, Judson Studios, and NOUS Engineering. Recreating Jean’s detailed illustrations, the design is based on a pentagonal hexecontahedron: a mathematical shape that takes on a spherical form through its repetitive panels. The structural solution minimizes visual interruptions and maintains the seamless flow of the mural. The result is a meticulously engineered assemblage of glass and steel, consisting of 42 custom-stained glass panels that collectively transform the Pagoda into a dynamic fusion of light and space.

Challenges
Composite glass–steel structure, seismic isolation with low-mass system, ultra-tight fabrication tolerances

The project features an innovative structural strategy, with an active load-bearing component working in tandem with minimal steel framing. We developed a glass-epoxy-steel bonded interface and paired it with a high-strength industrial adhesive, selected for its stiffness and bearing strength. Positioned between the flexibility of silicone and the rigidity of metal, the rubber-like adhesive ensures effective load transfer from glass to metal, providing a seamless connection. 

A low-mass base isolation system helps resist seismic forces by insulating the structure from the effects of severe ground shaking. This system allows lateral movement during earthquakes while minimizing the accumulation of forces at the joints and within the glass panels.
