Joy on York
The follow-up restaurant for Vivian Ku of Pine & Crane on Sunset Junction, Joy on York occupies two adaptively reused unreinforced masonry buildings.
In order to accommodate the kitchen and dining areas, the center bearing wall was removed, a process that triggered seismic upgrades due to the brittle and fragile nature of these buildings. In order to limit the intensity of the upgrades and expedite the review process, NOUS worked with DRP to clarify code requirements and with the Los Angeles Building Department to complete the project. New beams and structurally efficient timber shear walls were strategically added, ensuring the structure’s long-term integrity.
