Green Street
Sandwiched in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, this turn-of-the-century concrete-frame structure needed to be retrofitted in order to comply with a city ordinance.
NOUS evaluated the seven-level structure and retrofitted it with concrete shear walls on a mat foundation with deepened piles that provide lateral stability to the aging building. The existing columns were wrapped in a glass-fiber reinforced polymer that provides added strength to prevent brittle failures during strong earthquake shaking. In addition to the seismic retrofit of the existing structure, NOUS worked with M-Rad Architects to make improvements to the existing facade, interiors, and rooftop for a future private lounge and bar—extending the building’s life and use.
