City Thread
Located in an underutilized public space, City Thread uses a single sculptural gesture to connect visitors in downtown Chattanooga.
Part art installation and part social infrastructure, City Thread responds to the evolving context of downtown Chattanooga with a static yet dynamic form that supports a plethora of self-guided and organized activities, while enhancing the appearance of the streetscape. The public art piece is a continuous, curving linear volume constructed from a series of simple large steel tubes. Visually impactful and programmatically efficient, its variable geometry allows users to discover different ways to utilize the alley—as a place to chat with friends, as a meeting point, or as a backdrop for a performance—activating the streetscape throughout the year as usage ebbs and flows with the seasons.
