BAR Intergenerational Community Center
From its oceanfront site, the BAR Intergenerational Community Center serves Venice residents and seniors by providing food access and social services.
While the existing structure no longer met the requirements of such a program, at least 50% of it had to be preserved in order to retain construction entitlements. To make this possible, NOUS advised BA Collective on shoring design and construction sequencing, supporting the design team in navigating the strict demolition criteria. Because a full seismic retrofit of the existing unreinforced masonry structure was necessary, NOUS created a 3D point cloud to verify existing conditions. NOUS also provided design and fabrication assistance for the custom metal panel system that wraps around the existing building as well as the two additional levels. The result is a completely new, and earthquake-safe, experience on a well-loved site.
